CHALLENGE
McDonald’s selected Sevan to project manage renovations of numerous Chicago-area spaces—including the iconic landmark Rock-N-Roll McDonald’s at 600 N. Clark Street. The project was part of the McDonald’s Experience of the Future (EOTF) initiative, which includes eco-friendly and tech-savvy spaces that attract very diverse groups of customers.
SOLUTION
Sevan used Carbon Cure Concrete, one of the first locations in Chicago to use this process, which recycles CO2 into the fresh concrete mix and permanently binds it to the concrete, reducing the carbon footprint. This restaurant is also the first commercial building to use Cross Laminated Timber, a new generation of a strong engineered wood panel system. This project utilized more than 10,000 plants, some of which will be harvested each fall and used for popup markets, youth educational programs and apothecary products.RESULTS
The flagship restaurant applied for the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certification. The eco-friendly design features large 27-foot windows which allow for substantial natural lighting, and the 1,000 plus solar panels generate more than 60 percent of the restaurant’s electrical energy. The green roof can hold up to 7,000 gallons of storm water, and the on-site underground stormwater tank can store an additional 65,000 gallons of water.
